We stayed at the Metropole for six nights in January, 2005. This is a comfortable and well-run hotel in an excellent location. Service standards are generally very high. Front desk, housekeeping, business center and health club are excellent. The Beaulieu restaurant is excellent for breakfast and good for dinner. There are two problems with this hotel. First, street side rooms are very noisy-- motorcyle noise is constant from 6 am until midnight. We moved to a garden side room which was much better. Second, rooms on the Metropole side of the hotel need rennovation. The hotel has started this process but did not know when it will be completed. The Opera side of the hotel has much newer rooms but does not have the historic charm of the Metropole side.
This is a first class hotel and is the best place to stay in Hanoi. Recommended.

You'll need this oasis in the midst of all the hustle and bustle. Clean...lovely rooms... high thread count on the sheets...creme caramel on the breakfast buffet...a bit of a language barrier with the staff...stay away from the French restaurant....the cafe with the garden is your best bet.

The hotel is refined and the service for the very most part excellent. However, I requested to extend my stay by 3 nights. Though the hotel was fully booked, I was advised that this was possible by the duty manager. On my last evening, I returned to the hotel at 7PM from a full day of meetings to find that my room was no available for me and that I had to vacate.

Though Metropole's staff were quick to arrange alternative accommodation, this particular situation left a negative impression about the hotel's internal communication. So warning: If you amend your stay at the Metropole, get the revised confirmation in writing or you might find yourself with no place to stay.

This hotel is part of the Legends of Indochine - which has several legendary hotels such as the Raffles Hotel in Singapore, Amanpuri in Phuket, Oriental Hotel in Bangkok.
The location is OK - it was convenient for us as it was closed to the Press Club where the Emeraude Cruise Office was - just a hop over!! It was closed enough for me to walk to the Opera House (which btw Hilton faces), it is also close to one end of the lake where you can go take a nice stroll.

Service I would say is excellent. The concierge staff is ultra nice. I spent some time chatting with them, asking all kinds of question, pertaining to opera tickets, water puppet tickets, taxi pricing, where to eat, whether is safe or not to walk in the dark etc...best bit is they were so upfront, frank and honest.
On one occassion I left my hat after checking out, and when I returned to the hotel days later, I asked them if they ever saw a hat which i had lost, I was so so grateful to have them back.
