I was initially placed on the top floor, which meant climbing 76
steps (no elevator)! I complained and was immediately transferred to a
1st floor room (22 steps). I agree about the hard mattresses, and
breakfast was very basic. But the staff are friendly, my room (204) was
large and the small balcony was a bonus. Laundry was cheap and always
returned on time. The location is good. Would I use it again?
Probably, but only if I could get a 1st floor room with a balcony.

I stay at Win hotel for 5 nights during my trip to hanoi from 23 to
28 Feb. Generally this is a friendly hotel, but seems like there is a
need for renovation....

Win Hotel wins for its friendly staff and location in the old
quarter surrounded by charming cafes and restaurants (specially
recommend Gecko's and Pinky Moon).
This can mean noise: builders
worked on a nearby shop till the early hours one night, but normally streetlife quietens down around 10 pm. The double rooms facing the
street are large, with balconies, and all the mod cons you'd
normally get in a much more expensive hotel. Two drawbacks: the
mattresses are super hard, and you get blasted in the early hours by
the loudspeakers around Hoan Kiem Lake. In November 03, we paid
US$30 for a double room, which included breakfast, but should
perhaps have negotiated a discount because it was on an upper floor.
