In every cabin, the rich decor evokes another age, when craftsmanship mattered more than the bottom line. But make no mistake: The Emeraude makes concessions to the modern era, with air conditioning, electricity and other amenities typical of an upscale hotel room. No need to bring your own hair dryer. We've got that. Umbrellas, slippers, bathrobes. We've imagined all the contingencies so you'll be fully prepared to enjoy your cruise.

- Enjoy kayaking trip on the water and swimming on quiet beaches.
- Learn more about Halong Bay’s history and local people.

Good: "We stayed on the Emeraude 5 years ago and have just stayed again. Wow! It was even better than we remember!

AMAZING beauty of Halong Bay coupled with the comfortable luxury of a replica 1920s boat.
Delicious food for every meal, faultless service by discreetly attentive staff and cosy cabins.
Worth the extra cost for such refined and lovely surroundings.

Good: "“Emeraude - beautiful boat but disappointing service”
We had a lovely cruise over to small island and visit to a cave. No real guiding but we were happy to do our own thing. Coming back to crepes on the deck was a lovely touch. A few of us enjoyed a swim off the back of the boat, which was great fun. Appreciated the towel but curious as to whether there was any system of accounting for who went in.

Dinner was nice and after some debate about the cost of corkage for our own bottle of wine (and very rude responses from the young French staffer (even after we spoke with our tour company) we enjoyed our wine with an average dinner. Nowhere near the quality I would have expected and with few Vietnamese choices.

The film Indochine being played on the deck was too loud, especially as most people seemed happier to sit in groups and chat.
The boat itself is beautiful and the amazing weather provided lots of opportunities to enjoy the sun decks. The staff at the sun deck bar were lovely.
The cabins where nicely fitted out - but 2 small bottles of water in the hot weather per cabin is not enough. The biscuit (cookie) was a nice touch.

Overall, good friends, a lovely boat, an amazing day trip and beautiful scenery made for a great weekend. However, the Emeraude does not deserve it's 5 star reputation (apart from perhaps boat maintenance and safety) and I will be looking at other safe and reliable options that perhaps offer a little more. Tourists might be willing to over-charged for drinks but your domestic and expat customers will not.

Bad: " As an expat who has lived in Hanoi for nearly 18 months, I had the impression that the Emeraude was the gold star in Halong Bay cruising. With 2 toddlers, a family trip wasn't really an option, so I was very excited about a girls weekend on the boat.

Arriving just in time to depart at lunchtime, we enjoyed a lovely buffet meal - although as other reviewers have noted, there was not even water included and drink prices are completely unreasonable. 80,000 for a can of tonic water or soda or the same for a 500ml bottle of water - when a bottle 3 times the size is sold on smaller boats for 25000! When tap water is undrinkable, water at least should be served at lunch and dinner.

I was also surprised by the early return to the pier - 9.30am on a Sunday morning. Would seem Emeraude is more interested in pushing through a flock of passengers than extending the experience (even for an hour, perhaps with some morning tea and cruising) for those on board.

The cafe was also fairly disappointing with only 1 male and 1 female toilet that functioned poorly.
