Good: "We have booked a 3 day/ 2 night cruise on Huong Hai Junk. The shuttle bus picked us up early in the morning from our hotel, as arranged, and drove us to Halong. When we arrived there, after a four hour trip, a guide welcomed us and transferred us to our junk boat.
At our arrival on Huong Hai, which was a seven cabin boat, we were greeted with a chilled towel and a welcome drink (tea), before we were shown to our room. The boat was very nice, it had a first floor deck where we could sit and relax, as well as a sundeck. The dining room was large and beautiful, built up in a traditional style. The cabin was all wood, small, but clean, with a large berth and a window on its side (and not above the head), as we requested. So we could enjoy the view. We also had a small bathroom, with clean towels, a sink, a toilet and a shower. Tip: ask for a cabin in front of the junk, far from the noise of the engine and for a berth on the side of the window. Warning: the windows do not close properly (good news: the staff is honest).
The crew was very friendly. The guide who took care of us the first 2 days (Kien) was very nice and helpful; he spoke very well English and French and tried to tell us lots of interesting things about food and Halong Bay. He also came with us on the kayaking trips. We strongly recommend the kayaking, because the water is very calm and one can actually visit floating villages and natural sites. We also liked the pearl farm. Tip: insist on kayaking as it is agreed in the schedule (take a printed copy with you), otherwise they will try to shorten the trip and take you back to the boat earlier (e.g. 1,5h instead of 2,5h).
"

Bad: " Minus: although we repeatedly asked for the sails to be raised in order to enjoy the “dragon look” of our boat, nobody cared about our request. It was quite frustrating, as otherwise we would have paid for a different kind of boat, not a traditional junk!
A second minus: almost all boats in Halong Bay are now painted in a cheap white paint, loosing a good deal of their original charm. They will be discontinued and replaced by modern boats in the coming years.
